How Diamonds Are Graded: A Complete Guide to Diamond Quality

Buying a diamond can feel complicated because two stones of the same size may have very different prices. One may appear bright, crisp, and lively, while another may look dull or slightly yellow. These differences are not accidental. They are the result of a detailed grading process used to evaluate a diamond’s quality.

Diamond grading provides buyers, jewellers, and traders with a shared language for describing a stone. It allows diamonds to be compared according to measurable characteristics instead of relying only on appearance or sales descriptions.

The most widely recognised grading system is based on the 4Cs: cut, colour, clarity, and carat weight. However, a complete diamond assessment also considers factors such as polish, symmetry, fluorescence, proportions, shape, measurements, and whether the diamond is natural, laboratory-grown, or treated.

Understanding how diamonds are graded will help you read a grading report, compare options more confidently, and choose a stone that offers the right balance of beauty, rarity, and value.

What Is Diamond Grading?

Diamond grading is the professional evaluation of a loose diamond’s characteristics. The process is usually carried out in a gemological laboratory under controlled lighting and viewing conditions.

A trained grader examines the diamond using specialised equipment, including microscopes, loupes, proportion-measuring instruments, ultraviolet lighting, and calibrated colour comparison stones.

The laboratory then issues a grading report containing information such as:

  • The diamond’s shape and cutting style
  • Its measurements
  • Carat weight
  • Colour grade
  • Clarity grade
  • Cut grade, when applicable
  • Polish and symmetry
  • Fluorescence
  • Proportions
  • A diagram showing clarity characteristics
  • Any detected treatments or identifying features

A grading report is not the same as a jewellery valuation. It describes the diamond’s qualities but does not normally state its retail price.

Who Grades Diamonds?

Diamonds may be graded by independent gemological laboratories, jewellery businesses, manufacturers, or individual gemologists. However, reports from established independent laboratories generally carry greater confidence because the laboratory is not directly involved in selling the diamond.

Well-known laboratories include the Gemological Institute of America, commonly known as GIA, as well as IGI, HRD Antwerp, GCAL, and other regional institutions.

Although grading systems are broadly similar, standards and consistency may vary between laboratories. A colour or clarity grade from one laboratory may not always be interpreted exactly the same way as a grade from another.

For this reason, buyers should compare not only the grade but also the laboratory that issued the report.

The First C: Diamond Cut

Cut is often considered the most important of the 4Cs because it has the greatest influence on a diamond’s visual performance.

A diamond’s cut grade does not refer simply to its shape. Round, oval, pear, cushion, emerald, and marquise are shapes. Cut quality describes how effectively the diamond’s proportions, facets, symmetry, and polish interact with light.

When light enters a well-cut diamond, part of it is reflected internally and returned through the top of the stone. This creates the brightness, sparkle, and flashes of colour associated with a beautiful diamond.

If the diamond is cut too deeply, light may escape through the bottom. If it is cut too shallow, light may also leak instead of returning to the viewer. A poorly proportioned diamond can therefore appear dark or lifeless even when it has high colour and clarity grades.

The Three Main Components of Diamond Appearance

Diamond cut influences three major visual effects:

Brightness is the combination of white light reflected from the diamond.

Fire refers to flashes of spectral colour created when white light is separated into different colours.

Scintillation describes the pattern of light and dark areas, as well as the flashes seen when the diamond, light source, or viewer moves.

A balanced diamond should display an attractive combination of all three.

Cut Grades

For round brilliant diamonds, laboratories may assign grades such as:

  • Excellent
  • Very Good
  • Good
  • Fair
  • Poor

Fancy-shaped diamonds are more difficult to grade because there is greater variation in their proportions and facet patterns. Some laboratories provide overall cut assessments for certain fancy shapes, while others mainly report polish, symmetry, and measurements.

When selecting an oval, pear, cushion, radiant, emerald, or marquise diamond, the buyer should not rely only on the grading report. Images, videos, proportions, and visual inspection are especially important.

Polish and Symmetry

Polish describes the smoothness and quality of the diamond’s facet surfaces. Poor polish may leave lines, abrasions, pits, or other surface features that interfere with light reflection.

Symmetry refers to how precisely the diamond’s facets are aligned and shaped. Examples of symmetry issues include an off-centre table, uneven facets, a misaligned culet, or an irregular outline.

Polish and symmetry are graded separately from the overall cut. Grades commonly range from Excellent to Poor.

For many buyers, Excellent or Very Good polish and symmetry provide a strong balance between beauty and value.

The Second C: Diamond Colour

The colour grade of most white diamonds measures the absence of colour. A diamond with less visible yellow or brown tint generally receives a higher grade.

The standard colour scale begins at D, representing exceptional colourlessness, and continues through Z, where yellow or brown colour becomes increasingly visible.

Understanding the Colour Scale

The scale is commonly divided into broad groups:

D to F: Colourless

These diamonds show very little to no detectable colour when graded under controlled conditions. They are rare and usually command premium prices.

G to J: Near Colourless

These diamonds may show slight warmth when compared directly with higher-colour stones, but they can still appear white in jewellery, particularly once mounted.

K to M: Faint Colour

A warmer tint becomes more noticeable. Some buyers appreciate this softer appearance, especially in yellow or rose gold settings.

N to R: Very Light Colour

Yellow or brown colour is more apparent.

S to Z: Light Colour

The diamond displays a noticeable body colour but does not usually qualify as a fancy-colour diamond.

Colour is assessed by comparing the diamond with master stones under standardised lighting. Graders normally view the diamond from the side or pavilion rather than face-up because the face-up appearance is influenced by cut and light return.

How Setting Metal Affects Colour

A diamond does not exist visually in isolation. The colour of the setting can influence how white or warm it appears.

White gold and platinum may make subtle warmth easier to notice, particularly around the edges of the stone. Yellow and rose gold can visually absorb or complement warmer tones.

For example, a well-cut G, H, I, or even J colour diamond may appear attractively white in a yellow-gold setting. This can allow a buyer to allocate more of the budget toward size or cut quality.

Fancy-Coloured Diamonds

Diamonds with strong natural colour are graded differently from diamonds on the D-to-Z scale.

Fancy-coloured diamonds may be yellow, pink, blue, green, orange, brown, violet, red, or combinations of these colours.

Their value is influenced by:

  • Hue
  • Tone
  • Saturation
  • Colour distribution
  • Rarity
  • Size
  • Clarity
  • Origin of colour

Fancy-colour grades may include Fancy Light, Fancy, Fancy Intense, Fancy Vivid, Fancy Deep, and Fancy Dark.

In fancy-coloured diamonds, stronger and more desirable colour can increase value, which is the opposite of the grading principle used for white diamonds.

The Third C: Diamond Clarity

Clarity measures the presence of internal and external characteristics.

Internal characteristics are known as inclusions, while external features are called blemishes.

Diamonds form under intense heat and pressure, so many natural diamonds contain small crystals, feathers, clouds, graining, or other identifying features. These characteristics are part of the diamond’s natural growth history.

A clarity grade considers the number, size, position, nature, colour, and visibility of these features.

The Diamond Clarity Scale

Clarity grades commonly include:

Flawless

No inclusions or blemishes are visible to a skilled grader under ten-times magnification.

Internally Flawless

No inclusions are visible under ten-times magnification, although minor surface blemishes may be present.

Very Very Slightly Included

VVS1 and VVS2 diamonds contain inclusions that are extremely difficult to see under ten-times magnification.

Very Slightly Included

VS1 and VS2 diamonds have minor inclusions that range from difficult to somewhat easier for a skilled grader to identify.

Slightly Included

SI1 and SI2 diamonds contain noticeable inclusions under magnification. Some may still appear clean to the unaided eye, depending on the inclusion and diamond.

Included

I1, I2, and I3 diamonds have obvious inclusions that may affect appearance, transparency, brilliance, or durability.

What Does Eye-Clean Mean?

An eye-clean diamond has no inclusions that are easily visible without magnification under normal viewing conditions.

Eye-clean is not an official laboratory grade. It is a practical visual description that depends on:

  • Viewing distance
  • Lighting
  • The viewer’s eyesight
  • Diamond size
  • Diamond shape
  • Inclusion type
  • Inclusion position

A well-chosen VS2 or SI1 diamond may appear just as clean to the unaided eye as a much more expensive VVS diamond.

This is why clarity should be evaluated according to appearance rather than grade alone.

Common Diamond Inclusions

Common clarity characteristics include:

Crystal: A mineral crystal enclosed within the diamond.

Feather: A small internal fracture that may appear white, transparent, or reflective.

Cloud: A group of tiny pinpoints that may create a hazy area.

Needle: A long, thin crystal.

Pinpoint: A very small crystal visible under magnification.

Twinning wisp: A series of inclusions formed during irregular crystal growth.

Cavity: An opening created when part of an included crystal reaches the surface or is removed during polishing.

Natural: A small portion of the original rough diamond surface left on the polished stone.

Not all inclusions are equally serious. A small crystal near the edge may be less noticeable than a dark inclusion under the centre of the table. A feather near a vulnerable corner may require more attention than a protected internal inclusion.

The Fourth C: Carat Weight

Carat is a unit of weight, not a direct measurement of size.

One carat equals 200 milligrams. A carat is divided into 100 points, so a 0.50-carat diamond may also be described as a 50-point diamond.

Two diamonds with the same carat weight can look different in size because their proportions and shapes are different.

A shallow diamond may spread more widely but lose light through the bottom. A deep diamond may carry hidden weight below the setting and look smaller from the top.

Therefore, buyers should consider face-up measurements together with carat weight.

Why Diamond Prices Jump at Certain Weights

Diamond prices do not increase in a perfectly straight line. Popular milestone weights such as 0.50, 0.75, 1.00, 1.50, and 2.00 carats often command higher per-carat prices.

A 0.95-carat diamond may look almost the same size as a 1.00-carat diamond but cost less because it falls below the one-carat threshold.

This can create opportunities for buyers seeking visual size without paying the full premium associated with a milestone weight.

Beyond the 4Cs

The 4Cs are essential, but they do not tell the entire story.

Diamond Shape

Shape strongly affects appearance, price, and how large the diamond looks.

Round brilliant diamonds are known for strong light performance and consistent grading standards. Fancy shapes may offer a larger visual spread or a more distinctive character.

Popular shapes include:

  • Oval
  • Cushion
  • Emerald
  • Pear
  • Marquise
  • Radiant
  • Princess
  • Asscher
  • Heart

Each shape has its own desirable proportions and potential visual issues.

For example, ovals, pears, and marquise diamonds may display a bow-tie effect, while emerald and Asscher cuts reveal inclusions more easily because of their open step facets.

Fluorescence

Fluorescence refers to a diamond’s reaction to ultraviolet light. Some diamonds emit a visible glow, most commonly blue.

Fluorescence grades may include None, Faint, Medium, Strong, and Very Strong.

Fluorescence is not automatically good or bad. In some lower-colour diamonds, blue fluorescence may make the stone appear slightly whiter under certain lighting. In rare cases, strong fluorescence can contribute to a hazy or oily appearance.

The individual diamond should be assessed rather than rejected based only on its fluorescence grade.

Measurements and Proportions

A grading report may include:

  • Table percentage
  • Total depth percentage
  • Crown angle
  • Pavilion angle
  • Girdle thickness
  • Culet size
  • Length-to-width ratio

These figures help describe the diamond’s geometry. However, no single proportion should be considered in isolation. The interaction between proportions determines the final appearance.

Natural, Laboratory-Grown, and Treated Diamonds

A grading report should clearly identify whether the diamond is natural or laboratory-grown.

Laboratory-grown diamonds have essentially the same crystal structure and optical properties as natural diamonds, but they are produced through technological processes rather than geological formation.

Treatments may be used to improve a diamond’s colour or clarity. Examples include high-pressure, high-temperature treatment, irradiation, laser drilling, or fracture filling.

Treatments should be disclosed because they can affect value, care requirements, and resale considerations.

How to Read a Diamond Grading Report

Begin by confirming that the report number matches the number inscribed on the diamond’s girdle, when an inscription is present.

Then review:

  1. Whether the diamond is natural or laboratory-grown
  2. Shape and cutting style
  3. Measurements and carat weight
  4. Colour and clarity grades
  5. Cut grade, if provided
  6. Polish and symmetry
  7. Fluorescence
  8. Proportions
  9. Clarity plot and comments
  10. Any mention of treatments or additional clouds, graining, or surface features

It is also wise to verify the report number through the issuing laboratory’s official report-checking system.

Why Two Diamonds With the Same Grade Can Look Different

A grading report reduces uncertainty, but it does not make every diamond with the same specifications identical.

Two 1.00-carat G-colour VS2 diamonds may differ in:

  • Cut precision
  • Inclusion position
  • Transparency
  • Fluorescence
  • Face-up size
  • Bow-tie effect
  • Facet pattern
  • Brightness
  • Overall visual balance

Diamond grading works within ranges. One VS2 diamond may sit close to VS1 quality, while another may be closer to SI1. One G-colour diamond may face up exceptionally white, while another may show more warmth.

The final choice should combine laboratory information with actual visual assessment.

Choosing Grades According to Your Priorities

There is no single perfect grade for every buyer.

A buyer who values rarity may choose a D-colour VVS diamond. Another buyer may prefer a larger G-colour VS2 diamond with excellent cut. Someone choosing an emerald-cut diamond may prioritise clarity, while someone selecting a brilliant-cut diamond may accept a lower clarity grade because the facet pattern hides inclusions more effectively.

A practical order of priority is often:

  1. Choose a shape you genuinely love.
  2. Prioritise attractive cut and light performance.
  3. Select a colour that appears pleasing in the intended setting.
  4. Choose a clarity grade that is visually clean and structurally suitable.
  5. Adjust carat weight to fit the budget.

Final Thoughts

Diamond grading is designed to make a complex product easier to understand, but a grading report should be treated as a decision-making tool rather than the final decision itself.

The 4Cs explain much of a diamond’s rarity and price, while polish, symmetry, fluorescence, proportions, transparency, shape, and visual character determine how it feels in person.

A beautiful diamond does not always require the highest grade in every category. The best choice is usually the diamond that uses the budget efficiently while delivering the appearance, size, and character that matter most to the wearer.

By understanding how diamonds are graded, buyers can move beyond impressive-sounding labels and make comparisons based on genuine quality. The goal is not simply to purchase a certificate. It is to choose a diamond whose beauty can be appreciated every time it is worn.
