A GIA diamond grading report is an independent document describing a diamond’s measurable and observable characteristics.

What Is GIA?
GIA stands for the Gemological Institute of America.
GIA developed the widely used D-to-Z colour scale and the modern 4Cs terminology.
A GIA grading report describes the diamond but does not set its selling price.
It is not the same as an appraisal, guarantee, or valuation.
Report Number
Every GIA report has a unique report number.
The number can be used to verify the report through GIA’s report-checking system.
Some diamonds have the report number laser-inscribed on the girdle.
The inscription is microscopic and normally requires magnification to read.
It helps connect the physical diamond with its documentation.
Shape and Cutting Style
This section describes the diamond’s outline and facet arrangement.

Carat Weight
Carat weight records the diamond’s mass.
One carat equals 0.2 grams.
The report commonly lists weight to two decimal places.
Carat should always be considered alongside measurements, because weight alone does not indicate face-up size.
Colour Grade
The colour grade describes the amount of visible yellow or brown tone in a white diamond.
The GIA scale ranges from D to Z.
D represents the least visible colour.
The report provides the technical grade, but it does not tell you whether the colour will be noticeable in your setting.
Shape, size, cut, and metal colour all influence perception.
Clarity Grade
The clarity grade describes the visibility and significance of inclusions and blemishes.

Polish Grade
Polish describes the quality of the diamond’s surface finish.
Grades commonly range from Excellent to Poor.
Minor polish features are often invisible without magnification.
Excellent polish is desirable, although Very Good may also provide a beautiful appearance.
Symmetry Grade
Symmetry evaluates how accurately the facets align and how balanced the shape appears.

- Pavilion depth

- Culet size
These figures help buyers understand how the diamond was cut.
However, numbers should not replace visual evaluation.
Table Percentage
The table is the large flat facet on the top of the diamond.
Table percentage compares its width with the overall diamond width.
A larger or smaller table can influence the balance of brightness and fire.
The ideal table depends on the other proportions.
Depth Percentage
Depth percentage compares the total diamond depth with its width.
A very deep diamond may appear small from the top.
A very shallow diamond may show light leakage.

Crown and Pavilion Angles
The crown is the upper part of the diamond above the girdle.
The pavilion is the lower part beneath the girdle.

Girdle Description
The girdle forms the outer edge of the diamond.
A report may describe it as:
- Extremely thin
- Very thin
- Thin
- Medium
- Slightly thick
- Thick
- Very thick
- Extremely thick
An extremely thin girdle may create durability concerns.
A very thick girdle may hide unnecessary weight.
Variation is common in fancy shapes.
Culet Description
The culet is located at the bottom of the diamond.
Modern diamonds often have no culet or a very small culet.
A larger culet may be visible through the table.
In antique-style diamonds, a visible culet may be intentional.
Comments Section
The comments section may contain important information not displayed elsewhere.

This section should always be read carefully.
What a GIA Report Cannot Tell You
A grading report cannot fully describe:
- How beautiful the diamond appears
- Whether the price is fair
- Whether a bow tie is distracting
- Whether the diamond looks large for its weight
- Whether you will notice the colour
- Whether an inclusion bothers you
- How the stone will look in the setting
The report is an analytical tool rather than a complete buying decision.
Final Thoughts
A GIA grading report provides valuable independent information about a diamond.
Use it to verify the 4Cs, understand proportions, identify inclusions, and compare stones.
However, do not purchase a diamond based only on the report.
